Year 9 Experimental Research Phase 2 : Plans

Equipment : Metre stick that goes up in millimeters to get an accurate measurement.

Clamp, to hold the metre stick in place so that it is always in the same position.

Stopwatch to measure how many seconds it takes to reach the floor (counting in 10th of second)

Paper clips to add on more weight, in order to affect the mass.

Independent Variable = Mass of the helicopter, to change the speed, by maybe adding paperclips.

Dependent Variable = Speed of the helicopter falling from the same height, to measure how long it takes to hit the floor.

As the helicopter is falling we will be measuring how long it takes to reach the floor, we will be measuring this with a stopwatch to make it as accurate as possible.

Controlled Variables = Shape, length of wings, setting, height of drop, same design.

We’re going to control the variables to make it an accurate test, we are going to control them by isolating them and not changing the control variables.

  1. Hi Cris,

We need to introduce some specificity here. You have accurately identified all the variables but you have not accurately stated them. You wrote “mass” for example. The mass of what? How are you going to measure speed? You must explain this.

Also- would you mind changing the title of your piece to “Year Nine Experimental Research Phase Two: Plans” to match my classwork post. It makes it really easy for me to find.
